Sphaira & Intercel: Powering mobility for isolated patients
In modern healthcare, ensuring patient safety while promoting mobility can be a complex challenge – especially for patients with a weakened immune system or highly infectious patients who require strict isolation. Sphaira has developed an innovative solution with the MOBY P1, a mobile isolation chamber that allows patients to safely leave their hospital rooms while remaining in a completely protected environment. A key element of this medical device is its reliable power supply, and for that, Sphaira relies on the certified chargers provided by Intercel.
A new era of mobility for isolated patients
Hospitals worldwide face the challenge of keeping medically fragile or infectious patients in isolation while ensuring they maintain quality of life. Traditional isolation rooms are costly and constrain patients to a single space, limiting their social interactions and mobility.
The MOBY P1 is designed to change this by providing a fully enclosed, air-filtered pod that allows patients to safely move around hospitals, go outside, and meet loved ones – without risking contamination. This is particularly beneficial for children undergoing chemotherapy or patients recovering from transplants who would otherwise spend weeks, sometimes months, in isolation. The MOBY P1 ensures that these patients can engage with the world while staying in a controlled environment.
Unlike traditional isolation methods that rely solely on stationary rooms, the MOBY P1 offers a flexible solution that seamlessly integrates into hospital workflows. Its design prioritizes both safety and usability, featuring a high-efficiency filtration system that maintains a controlled clean-air environment. With its intuitive operation and maneuverability, healthcare professionals can easily transport patients without compromising safety protocols, making it a valuable asset for modern hospitals.
“With MOBY P1, we offer social contact while ensuring isolation. At Charité Hospital in Berlin, children undergoing oncology treatments can now reconnect with their families, go outside, and see the world again,” says Julian Schulz-von Siemens, Chief of Staff at Sphaira.
The role of intercel in powering MOBY P1
A highly advanced medical device like MOBY P1 requires an energy solution that meets strict medical safety regulations while being user-friendly for hospital staff. Sphaira turned to Intercel to meet these challenges.
“Intercel was one of the few companies that could provide a fully certified charger meeting the required ISO and MDR Class 1 medical standards. Without these chargers, obtaining medical certification would have been significantly more difficult,” explains Julian Schulz-von Siemens.
The Intercel chargers used in the MOBY P1 ensure safe, efficient, and consistent charging cycles. As a fully electric device, MOBY P1 typically runs for five hours before requiring a recharge, depending on usage. Given the critical nature of hospital operations, reliability is non-negotiable.
“Our chargers are used almost daily, and we rely on fast, reliable delivery from Intercel. On one occasion, we urgently needed replacements, and Intercel delivered within days—this kind of responsiveness is crucial for a medical supplier like us.”

As Sphaira expands its production capacity, having a strong, scalable supply chain for power solutions is more important than ever. The MOBY P1 units are already in use in German hospitals, with plans to ramp up production significantly in the coming years.
Future innovation & continued collaboration
Sphaira is not stopping at MOBY P1. The company is already working on a new autonomous patient transport solution, which will require higher battery power, automated docking stations, and even wireless charging solutions. While still in the concept phase, these advancements present new opportunities for further collaboration with Intercel.
“For now, we will continue using Intercel’s chargers in our MOBY P1 system. But as we expand and develop our next-generation devices, we see even more potential for collaboration in optimizing our energy solutions,” says Julian.
With hospitals increasingly recognizing the value of mobility in improving patient recovery times, solutions like MOBY P1 are paving the way for a more human-centered approach to isolation care.
Intercel is proud to be part of this groundbreaking medical innovation, ensuring that MOBY P1 and future solutions receive the power they need to transform patient care worldwide.
